Practical Skills

Another main focus is on home skills. Some of these skills might include home economics, auto repair or cooking. We do this through daily sessions going over the clients' finances OR nightly activities where the clients might choose a dessert and cook it for the others, with the help of certified staff. On the weekends, our staff will give the clients the option to participate in either carpentry, auto mechanics, or minor electrical work (All work done with either certified or Journeyman in each trade with all safety precautions taken.)

Youth who are 16 years of age and older are given the Daniel Memorial Assessment. This is a systematic, competency-based approach to life skills training. This assessment focuses on 16 categories: Money Management, Community Resources, Legal Skills, Educational Planning, Housing, Personal Appearance, Job Seeking Skills, Housekeeping, Transportation, Interpersonal Skills, Emergency and Safety, Leisure Activities, Food Management, Health, Job Maintenance Skills, and Religion. From this assessment SHOUT and Case Managers then create detailed Treatment Plans to help youth further their knowledge in order for the youth to be successful once they reach independence.
